The Sumner Mansion is one of the few preserved examples of the early work of Asher Benjamin, who after leaving Vermont for Boston, became famous for his influence in the Greek Revival in Colonial architectural designs. His later work still can be seen on Beacon Hill and other historic areas of Boston.
