The Shire Inn takes its name from its location at the seat of Orange County, Vermont. In the early days, counties in Vermont were called "Shires", which in England, was the name given to the domain of an earl.

Did you know that the "shire reeve" became the modern day "sheriff"? And his territory was a "riding"; the distance he could ride in one day. Ridings are modern day electoral districts in many Anglo-Saxon countries. At the Shire Inn, you do not have to ride anywhere. The local sheriff will not call in. Just relax and enjoy Central Vermont's "old world" hospitality.

The Inn has six individually decorated guestrooms, named after Vermont "shires". Each has a 10 foot ceiling, wide plank flooring, and tall windows. All have modern private baths.

Our Standard rooms, above, have a queen or king bed and wood burning fireplaces, pleasant and romantic even on the cool Summer evenings in this part of Vermont. Those below, our Colonial rooms, are also romantic and cozy with either a brass or canopy double bed. All beds are made up with hand-ironed, 100% cotton sheets. ( you will feel the difference!)
Reservations are recommended for all properties listed.
