Home > The Pond House
Region: South Central Vermont
Town: Brownsville
The Pond House is a small "all season" Vermont Bed and Breakfast snuggled in the Green Mountains just south of Woodstock, Vermont's famous horse country.
The Pond House has a wonderful spring fed pond for swimming in the summer, horse accomodations on an endless system of dirt roads and polite dogs are welcome to romp over our ten acres of fields and woods. The Inn is surrounded by ten stone walled acres, and housed in an 1830's white cape. The pond is surrounded by trees and fields and is spring fed making it perfect for an afternoon swim or relaxing on a float with a good read.
In the winter we have meals by the fire, and we are close to three major ski resorts and several excellant xc ski areas with backcountry xc and snowshoeing outside the door.
The Inn is cozy with a smattering of antiques, Orientals and touches of Laura Ashley here and there. The accommodations include three guest rooms with queen sized beds, down comforters and private baths with marble and European fixtures. A candlelit dinner and breakfast by the fire, set with family silver and linen, are included in the rates.
Awaken to apple french toast breakfast or a mushroom souffle accompanied by fresh fruit, yogurt, juices, cereals and freshly ground Starbuck's coffee.
You needn't worry about finding a restaurant. The dinner hour will surprise and please with different offerings nightly. These delights might include savory pumpkin ravioli with a rosemary cream infusion or perhaps lobster risotto after a salad of greens, gorgonzola and pears. Deserts include apple tart or pears baked with Marsala and white wine to mention a few.
Return from a day's outing and relax with a glass of wine on our patio in the stone walled flower and herb garden overlooking one of Vermont's most beautiful views.
Gretel is an enthusiastic bike tourer and knows the best routes in the area, which is home to the Killington Stage Race. The Pond House specializes in bike tours for all skill levels. Ride along lakes, mountain valleys and streams, visit the first capital of Vermont the worlds longest double span covered bridge, the home of Saint Gaudens and the surrounding gardens for a Sunday afternoon picnic and concert, or the birthplace of Calvin Coolidge.
Winter brings skiing at Ascutney, Okemo or Killington all within easy reach from The Pond House. The Inn is on the VAS network allowing for unlimited XC skiing outside the back door (backcountry ski tours, guided or self guided.) Nighttime skating on the pond by the bonfire, or sledding on our torchlit run.
